Communication

mLab Southern Africa

Showing The Value Of Digital Inclusion

mLab Southern Africa creates routes into the digital economy through skills, entrepreneurship and technology development. Gala Digital helped bring that work into view through communication and video, then turned mLab’s research into an impact report that partners and stakeholders could follow.

Problem

mLab worked across several provinces and programmes, but its communication did not always present those parts as one recognisable national story. The organisation also held detailed evidence about its contribution to South Africa’s digital economy, yet the volume of findings made the full picture difficult to absorb quickly.

Solution

The relationship began with a communication direction intended to give mLab greater consistency across its regions. Gala Digital produced video and campaign material that showed the people and opportunities behind the programmes, including promotional work around CodeUp.

In 2023, mLab supplied the research and findings for its economic impact assessment. Gala Digital shaped the information into a 22-page report, giving the evidence an editorial structure and visual language that made the argument easier to understand without changing what the research said.

One Organisation Across Its Regions

The early communication work considered how mLab could speak with greater consistency while remaining relevant to the communities served by each programme. A clearer digital identity and more deliberate content planning helped place the focus on the opportunity mLab creates, rather than treating every event as an isolated announcement.

Showing The People Behind The Programmes

Video gave the work a human centre. The CodeUp material presented the participants and their progress in a format that could travel across digital channels, helping audiences see more than the name of a programme.

The visual communication was built around the people doing the work and the opportunities being created. That made a complex organisation easier to recognise through the lives and ideas connected to it.

Turning Research Into A Report People Could Follow

The economic impact assessment brought together evidence about skills development, startup support, employment and digital solutions. Gala Digital organised the material into a deliberate reading sequence, then used hierarchy and data visualisation to help each finding land in context.

mLab retained ownership of the research and conclusions. Gala Digital’s role was to shape the editorial structure and visual presentation so the evidence could be read, understood and shared more effectively.

Keeping The Evidence Honest

The report separated the organisation’s findings from the design used to present them. Statistics remained tied to the source material, while charts, section openings and summaries helped readers move through the evidence without overstating what it proved.

Results

mLab gained a body of communication that could show both the people behind its programmes and the evidence behind its contribution. The final report turned extensive research into a clear public-facing document while preserving the integrity of the supplied findings.
